JOURNEY TO THE DHOWS
In 2009 Beat Presser travelled to Tanzania. He wanted to learn more about the Dhow Culture of the Indian Ocean. Fascinated by the traditional wooden ships and the world’s oldest surviving boatcraft, he lived and sailed for many months together with African seamen. A photographic essay, an exhibit and a book resulted from these many travels. A year later Beat Presser returns to Tanzania. In his luggage 64 black and white photographs. All of them water, wind and storm proof. Meanwhile, the Goethe Institut in Dar es Salaam had organized an exhibition tour. The photographs would be displayed where they were taken the year before. On land but also on board of the Dhow Makida.

AUSSTELLUNGEN
EXHIBITION
The first Dhow exhibition took place in Tanzania in autumn 2010 on the Dhow Makida sailing from harbour to harbour along the Tanzanian Coast and to the Island of Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia. But the photographs were also exhibited in schools, market places, bus stations, bars, restaurants, local tourist offices and in The House of Wonders, the famous museum in Stone Town in Zanzibar.
And since the book was published the Dhau exhibition was also shown in many different places like in Bremberhaven, Basel, Berlin, Colombo, Galle, Hamburg, Solms, Munich, Nairobi, Mombasa, Lamu and yet more to come.

”The sea is not the end of the world. It is the beginning of a whole new world of subsistence, resources, and opportunities.“
This statement summarises the message of this collection of beautiful and expressive photographs that Beat Presser has been taking of and on Dhows while sailing down the Swahili coast of East Africa. Probably as soon as humans learnt to walk, they tried to find ways to cross water, whether a narrow stream with a log serving as a bridge, a few logs tied together as a raft, a dugout canoe, or ultimately planks sewn together as a boat to cross longer stretches of the sea with a paddle, an oar or a sail…

EXTRACT FROM THE DHOW BOOK
”Since last year, the Somali pirates have increased their radius and extended their forays to the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles. The entire Indian Ocean is contaminated by pirates, said the Director of the Port Authority in Dar es Salaam to me yesterday when we tried in vain to still have our papers issued. He told us that three months ago, pirates boarded a vessel within the Tanzanian three mile zone. Shortly before the pirates came on board the captain had sent an SOS distress call to the Coast Guard, who had rushed to the rescue with heavy guns. But the well-intentioned intervention had failed. The pirates went on the attack and forced the Coast Guard boat to flee. In the waters in which we are going to sail too, pirates were up to their mischief. Not a pleasant prospect. Furthermore the pirates found followers – south of Dar es Salaam there were local pirates also lurking around…“
SETTING SAILS
Dhows, traditional Arab wooden sailing vessels, are places of social interaction for traders, fishermen and other inhabitants of the coast. From autumn until spring, the northeast monsoon Kaskazi blows the Dhows from the Persian Gulf, India or China to the East African Coast. The southwest monsoon Kusi sends them sailing back home. The travelling exhibition Kusi and Kaskazi [South And North] tells the story of these boats in the Indian Ocean and shows black and white photographs by Beat Presser. The Goethe-Institut in Dar es Salaam invited the Swiss photographer to sail on a dhow last year along the coast of Tanzania. He photographed the lives of the people on the water, the fishermen and their families and the monsoon wind between the waves.
